Adidas TT - Coast to Coast

I was holding off on reviewing the Adidas TT - feeling like it really needed to be tested in true technical trails. I had to head back to New Jersey, and with no snow on the ground this time - I got to cover some of my old hometown trails.

It’s just so darn rocky over there, entirely different from here in Boise, and even many places out west. Just non stop rocks everywhere! The TT won’t be a shoe for everyone, but it worked really well running at the type of cadence and style that you need to handle “Beast Coast” terrain.

I missed my connecting flight back home, so I got to explore some trails within an Uber-ride from the San Francisco airport. More of a scenic fun run here - the TT held its own on the California Carpet.

On Cloudsoma

The title says it all - is an On shoe an On shoe without the PODS? The Cloudsoma replaces traditional Cloudtec pods with new Cloudtec Connect technology. With a unique articulating sensation underfoot - since this initial review, I’ve been digging them more and more.

If you’re interested in these, pay attention to my analysis of the upper. The sock-style design has quite a bit of volume to it. You might need to size down if you are in between sizes.

Training “Yards”

While keying in on the upcoming backyard race, I started doing some training sessions where I simulated the 4.1666 mile “yard” distance, with short breaks in between. In this session I did 4 “yards” in 4 different road models - just for fun!

#1 Salomon Aero Glide 4, #2 Brooks Glycerin Flex, #3 Speedland RX:FPY, #4 Mizuno Neo Zen 2. These are not actually models I planned to use in the event, but it was an effective session for testing and comparison. All 4 road shoes, but really no two close to being similar.

Craft Endurance 3

Another kind of simulated backyard session here - 2 x 7ish miles in the new Craft Endurance 3. 9mm drop here, which typically doesn’t agree with me, but I find this one to be quite smooth on varied terrain, including the treadmill.

Also some gear and apparel testing - the Hypervent Light Wind Jacket, also from Craft.

and some shades from Tifosi

Plus, for the sake of going hands-free on the road - let’s throw in the Nathan Aerozip 1L vest.

Fabric-like in fit, this shirt-vest(?) provides easy hydration access and storage pockets up front. This setup works well under a light shell as seen here, or you could go topless as the inner material is super-smooth.

BIG Speedgoat 7 Comparison

I might have jumped the gun earlier in calling the Kipsummit Max the natural evolution of the Speedgoat model. Then the Speedgoat 7 came out - and I now see these as two really great, adjacent models.

They are not the same shoe though - there are notable differences.

Wear Foehn

Premium apparel from Foehn in for test - I took a big spill towards the end of my Kipsummit Max / Speegoat 7 test run - and the Foehn kit proved to be quite durable!

I absolutely love the Cortes Delta shirt - the fabric feels fantastic and super premium. The Relais Shorts (2-in-1 style) have build in storage loops and pockets for multiple gels - more to come as I will certainly see how many I can pack in there. Stay tuned!

Scarpa Golden Gate LT

I discovered the Golden Gate LT one as I was browsing the Scarpa site. I hadn’t heard much about it, but it sparked my interest as I am a huge fan of the Golden Gate ATR 2.

This one has similar design cues, as well as a focus on Door to Trail running. I finally nailed my Scarpa sizing here - EU 43.5 (US 10). Previous Scarpa models that I’ve tested have also been tagged as US 10, but EU 43. Pay attention to Euro sizing - especially for Euro-based brands!

La Sportiva Prodigio Pro - Size Up!

The muddy end of my pristine white La Sportiva Prodigio Pros.. I sized up a full EU size here - 43.5 in my original black pair to 44.5 in the pair you see here. How did that work out? Hint - perhaps you have more leeway to size up than you think.

Brooks Cascadia Elite - New Contender

The Brooks Cascadia Elite is one of the heavy hitters of 2026. I find them versatile in a way that matches up with any trail super shoe on the market.

In this full review I decide on which sizing works best - my normal US 10, or my first-ever Brooks US 10.5. Also, a few VERY important comps at the end!

Mizuno Neo Accera - the surprise

I was totally expecting one of the Neo road shoes, so you can imagine the shock seeing this one pop out of the box. The Neo Accera is I believe the first serious trail shoe from Mizuno. Where does it land and more importantly, for a brand new model, what are some comparable shoes?

Btw, I did receive the Neo Zen 2 later in the week.

Arc’teryx Sylan 2 Q&A

This one is focused on comments from my Sylan 2 review. I got many questions specifically about the Prodigio Pro, but as you can see there were also some other comparisons. A lot of my favorite picks here, with most being very versatile trail options.

Adidas Speed 2

I did one quick trail “speed” workout in the new Speed 2 (5 x 8:00) - these are the real deal. Probably a unique shoe in that.. they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Reminds me a lot of the original “Speed Ultra”. This one is next up in my Adidas test queue.

Topo Pursuit 3

The Pursuit 2 was perhaps my favorite zero drop trail shoe - I don’t get the chance to put many miles in them these days, but they’re still on the shelf, which says something.

Topo sticks with the formula here - a comfortable and supportive zero drop, Boomerang insole, durable materials, solid upper hold, comfortable but not crazy wide toebox, and no skimping on the outsole.

Creepers Socks

Speaking of comfortable toeboxes - a new color from Creepers as well as updated & improved materials. Hmmmm.. which shoe could be a good match for these?

Mount to Coast C1

Yea you guessed it! The C1 is actually the best fit for the Creepers, more so than the H1 - check out my full review which includes detailed comparisons between the C1, H1 and R1.

I also talk about how I’ve been piling up the “un-fresh legs” miles in the C1s after running a 6H timed race last weekend. Sorry, I cannot divulge my shoe pick, as they are still confidential at this point.

I ran officially 48.94 miles in 6 hours - which was a great confidence booster for my upcoming Backyard Ultra. No, I won’t need to run nearly as fast in that one, and of course I will be able to STOP and take breaks in the Backyard!

Arc’teryx Sylan 2

I was personally looking forward to this one - and the re-vamped Sylan 2 does not disappoint! I took this one out for a solid 17 miler through all kinds of terrain and it delivered on its promise of a propulsive and efficient mountain ride.

Aside from the new carbon fiber composite plate, the biggest change is the smoothing out of the rear rocker - giving a more balanced and stable feel.

Lowa Skyterra

German brand Lowa translates its alpine-driven design into a more “American-friendly” package: more cushioning, more energy, and a more accommodating fit.

But certainly not skimping on outsole! This one feels quite beefy underfoot - lots to break down and I’m waiting for the right terrain to open up. I loved the agile ride of the Amplux 2 GTX.. can the new Skyterra possibly adapt that ride to a much larger package?

Hoka Rocket X Trail

Hans Troyer crushed Black Canyon in this one. It’s been out for a while - a bit non-descript in the initial Black/Blue colorway. But this new lime colorway - WOW!

41/35mm of stack here - ATPU foam.. at a pretty insane 9.3 oz in my US 10 / EU 44. That is quite an explosive package!

Love the feel of that ATPU foam underfoot.. plate + ATPU.. a setup that I love in the Kipsummit Race. The foam feels even deeper in this model from Hoka.

INOV8 Trailfly V2

Ahead of the much-anticipated Trailfly Pro, I’ll be testing some updated models from INOV8. It’s been a little while since I’ve run in one of their shoes - they’re undergoing a bit of a brand refresh at the moment.

The Trailfly V2 gets a more secure midfoot fit, on top of sticker Graphine-Grip underfoot. This one has quite an interesting feel on foot - the flex groove along the ball of the foot allows almost a barefoot-type level of flex.

Of course, the OG beaded TPU Boomerang insole. I have to note that sizing seems to run pretty small here. I’ve got a US 10.5, yet they’re still not overly spacious. Definitely more to come here as I move through my testing queue.

Brooks Cascadia Elite

The iconic Cascadia - in perhaps its pinnacle form. I’ve got two pairs.. in two different sizes.. but why?

Mammut Aenergy Trail 2026

I round out my testing of Mammut’s all-new 2026 trail models. The Speed model is still my pick of the three, but there’s elements of the Endurance Ultra that work well as a super protective alpine shoe.

Although I did not run A/B in both shoes (they’re too different), expect the usual deep dive into all the details. These are Mammut’s first models - with more development on the way, keep an eye on this brand going forward.

UltrAspire Traverse

As you can see from the previous pic, I’ve started testing the new (20L!) UltrAspire Traverse pack. What better way than to carry around an extra pair of shoes on the run? I also have another segment in the Sylan 2 review checking out those super handy adjustable chest straps.

On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper

Another road super (or Hyper???) trainer in for test. I initially measured 45mm at the heel, so this one definitely qualifies for the category. 23 miles within just over 24 hours, with another 8 mile run, and a morning of skiing sandwiched in between.

Yea.. this Monster can handle some miles. Trying to see about getting a Lightspray model for comparison.. not sure how that upper would work out - I’d definitely need to size down - but it looks pretty radical!

RTIC 16 QT Road Trip Cooler

I’ve started to kit out my van for some summer RUN-ventures - cool drinks are a MUST! I saw the Road Trip Cooler pop up in my feed, and knew it would be perfect. The slim form factor is just the right size to stash in a smaller vehicle and has enough capacity for longer adventures.

Stay tuned for upcoming RUN-ventures on the channel! I’ve also got an Outback Jug in for test - cold drinks after long runs, and even refills mid-long run!

Tifosi Sanctum SL

We’ve been having more than a few t-shirt days throughout the winter.. perhaps a good time to think about some summer shades? The new Tifosi Sanctum SL removes the bottom rim from the stylish Sanctum for a fresh look.

For some reason (I can’t exactly figure out why) - the nosepiece on this SL model seems to hold more securely than the regular Sanctum. Perhaps better weight balance?

Mount to Coast C1

Mount to Coast enters the “super trainer” realm with the new C1. At 42/36mm, it’s Mount to Coast’s highest stack yet. This one has more of a road flavor, think - pumped up R1

That CircleCELL foam (from the H1) combined with a rubberized lower layer has something going on! Stay tuned for a full review towards the end of March and look for an early April release.

Nike ACG Ultrafly Trail

The 2nd version of the Ultrafly has been a long.. long.. time coming for Nike. Things are totally different this time around with the rebirth of ACG. Nike is taking trail seriously now.

But is this re-vamped “ACG” Ultrafly a big step up from the original? Can Nike be trusted to come up with a legitimate trail supershoe? I got out right away for an initial feel out. Check this one out for the scoop on fit and initial feel if you need to get into these ASAP.

I’ll have a more thorough review down the road after more miles, and you can bet on some comparisons!

Hoka Speedgoat 7

The title says it all - Hoka Speedgoat 7 - IMO, best Speedgoat ever. New supercritical midsole, better toebox, secure upper - everything you want in an every day trainer, long distance shoe, and race day option. Check out my video for 35 miles of weekend testing!

Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra

First Run video will be dropping this weekend. I actually took these out the day after my 25 miler in the Speedgoat 7. Boy was I shocked how good they felt.

The updated Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2 has that “WOW” factor once you take your first few steps in them. The heel and fit has been improved to the point where it feels glove-like for me. A worthy successor to the “original” Speed Ultra?? Much more to come with this one.

Adidas Terrex Agravic TT

It took the new Terrex Agravic TT out on tired legs, figuring they would be a good pick for a mellow day. Actually no, these are positioned more as a technical race day option.

I was surprised that they felt quite firm underfoot, but perhaps I was thinking about the Agravic 4 (I really like V3 as a training shoe). I’m going to look for some more rugged terrain to test these in (on fresher legs).

Fresh Releases

Yes, I like light colored trail shoes. Seriously, is this not the most gorgeous trail shoe you’ve ever laid eyes on? And yes, I think they’re going to look just as good with mud and dirt caked all over them!

La Sportiva Prodigio Pro (WHITE) - Oh btw, I upsized to a US 11 in this one - I’m looking to do some more longer distance comparisons in these..

TNF Altamesa 500 V2

The Altamesa 500 V2 was supposed to drop at the beginning of February, then I was told March 10, then it snuck out earlier on Running Warehouse. EDIT: now available at REI

This is one of the shoes I’m looking at as a potential Backyard Ultra pick (as well as the Mount to Coast C1). If you’ve snagged an early pair, let me know what you think.

Kiprun Kipsummit Max / Race

Check out my comparison video against The North Face’s Vectiv Pro 2. Such similar rides between these two - this wasn’t a full A/B test run, just some thoughts during a long run and a closeup look at the end.

I believe both the Race and the Max are available in Europe right now, but not yet in the US. Running Warehouse has them listed as available for order in April.

After YEARS(!) of waiting (just like the original Ultrafly), the new ACG Ultrafly has arrived! Are you ALL-IN on Nike ACG? Are you just itching to have that big swoosh (and glaring bright orange) on your feet out on the trails?

Well, if you’re anywhere on the fence, or perhaps curious about fit and sizing, check out my first run video.

I focus on the feel straight out of the box in this 10 miler, and dig into the fit and sizing of this latest Ultrafly. Hint - it’s wide, spacious in the toebox, but not out of control like V1.

Specs are verified as well - I find an exact match on the stack height at the heel (which is a rarity).

My US 10.0 weighs in at 10.4 oz (296g), while Nike reports a spec weight of 10.1 oz (in the same US 10). Most brands fudge the spec weight a little bit.

10.4 is not light for a trail super shoe. In fact many (plated) trail “super shoe” models are hitting the sub 10 oz range in my sizing. If does feel like a “substantial” shoe underfoot.

Yes, this shoe did win on the fast track of Western States, but it also seems designed to handle “All Conditions”. They went with a dual/parallel carbon plate setup to help with handling.

There’s still quite a bit of stiffness to manage, but the fit and foot security should help with that. I get the sense that the shoe will break in a bit with more miles and hopefully allow a bit more flex underfoot.

I’m getting serious about the 2026 season - the first race on the calendar is the Banana Slug Backyard Ultra in April.

It’s a Silver Coin event for the BIG’s Backyard Ultra Team World Championships. Essentially, if I win, I’m on Team USA! It’s a long shot, but I’m going to give it my best shot.

I spend a bit of time discussing my training status for the upcoming 12 week block. Also lots of discussion on Backyard Ultra shoe choices including the Mount to Coast H1, The North Face Altamesa 500 V2, as well as the Tarkine Autopilot.

Rewinding to my New Jersey trip - I had planned some technical East Coast trail testing for these two supershoes, the On Cloudultra Pro (new PURPLE accent colorway here at REI!) and the new Kiprun Kipsummit Race.

But it snowed, so all the rocks and roots were covered up. I did cover fit and sizing thoroughly, but keep an eye out for Part 2 of this matchup at some point.

Another two-parter here, this time with a Q&A session, followed by on-the-run testing. The North Face Altamesa 500 V2 (launching March 10) vs Salomon Ultra Glide 4 (available now, also in WIDE). Spoiler, I like both of these shoes, and they will both keep a spot in my rotation.

But I think one of them has better range as far as racing (and it’s certainly on my Backyard Ultra shoe pick list).

In my Q&A video, I talk about the discrepancy between the Ultra Glide 4’s specified stack height, and what I actually measured. Please follow me on IG if you don’t already - I post specs and comparison info that I find interesting there. I also get good ideas for videos based on comments and feedback.

We had one day of snow in the valley! I dropped everything in order to try out my ICEBUG Myr BUGrip studded shoes that have been sitting on my shelf throughout this so far non-existent winter.

It was actually a solid test run, with some snow, and sections of slicker frozen stuff underneath. Check out my companion article with a few pics from the run.

I’m super excited to have the new Zygos 6.0 from UltrAspire. V5 has been my go-to for pretty much all of my longest distance ultra races. It keeps the Zygos flavor, but there are some new changes. It has moved up in capacity.

I’m a big fan in general of UltrAspire, and I have many of their vests. Keep an eye out for a roundup of some of their latest models in the near future. Yes, I do have the Traverse (20L!) in for test. I have a couple of adventure ideas for that one.

I’m a slipper guy.. any time I go anywhere, on a trip, in the RV, hotels, staying at someone’s house, etc., you can bet I’m bringing some indoor comfort footwear!

I think it’s safe to say that ROLL Recovery has all the options covered here.

You’ve got your standard sport slide - the SUPERPLUSH S1 - seen here in their home spot next to the treadmill. Post-run, shoes off, sweaty feet straight in to the slides.

You may notice a styling change here - they’ve removed the large logo lettering from the top of the slide strap in favor of a smaller logo on the side. They look much more sleek now.

The SOLACE SLIDE takes comfort to the next level with a soft suede strap - which is adjustable!

There are two overlapping flaps which allow you to dial in your fit exactly. No more worrying about half sizes. I sized up this time to a US 10, and with those adjustable straps, the fit is superb. These have become my all day, around the house footwear.

Not to be outdone, for those who prefer a flip-flop style, the SOLACE FLIPFLOP offers the same adjustability as the SLIDE. A sculpted toe post maintains the soft, plush feel in every area.

The FLIPFLOP also adds a small, grippy traction area around the big toe. The SOLACE FLIPFLOP may turn into my backyard cruiser once the weather warms up.

All models use ROLL’s BLOOM foam - which is an Algae/EVA blend - just the right amount of compression/support with each step. The fit is roomy, allowing your foot muscles to spread out and relax. Support under the arch is slight, giving a well-supported and unobtrusive feel underfoot. I literally wear the SOLACE slides (the gray ones) all day around the house.

Yes, I know you can just screw sheet metal shoes into any old running shoe.. I’ve done it. Yes it works, but oftentimes you can feel the pressure from those screws pushing up into the bottom of your feet.

And they certainly don’t offer the same level of agility and grip that you get with slimmer, integrated steel studs. Especially when paired with a solidly cushioned, yet stable, eTPU midsole..

What’s not to like about a well padded ankle collar to keep the snow and cold out (and foot warmth in)?

The heel sits deep in there, giving a positive feel of lockdown in slippery conditions.

Nice, smooth flex lets those studs adapt and do their thing.

If you’re out their on the trails in winter, or even out on the roads - having a dedicated studded shoe can give you the confidence to log those year-round miles!

More NNormal Kjerag 02 Testing

The NNormal Kjerag 02 is so versatile, it’s easy to think of comparisons. The Nike Terra Kiger 10 might not stack up against the Kjerag 02 as a race option, but perhaps its sweet spot is daily miles in the lightweight category?

Nathan Pinnacle Pro 6L

Another mixed test run here. The Pinnacle Pro 6L is more my style as a legit option for trail running/racing. Love those soft flasks, ExoSpine + extended straws.. a great setup if you prefer bottle storage lower on the chest.

This was a solid 17 mile test run for the Kipsummit Max. Loving this one so far - kept the feet fresh over the course of this long one. Yes, winter has been weird so far in Idaho - I got to try out a new t-shirt! the Apex Ultra from Haimont

Light and Fast - more Speed Testing

Currently working through testing of the three new models coming from Mammut in 2026. So far, the lightest- Aenergy Trail Speed has been my favorite. It does look kind of “Salomon-y”..

R.A.D UFO

Quick trip back to New Jersey this week - allowing me to rack up some road miles in the R.A.D UFO. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, and I really wasn’t sure if it was for real.. it is!

Idaho Ski Trip

3 days of skiing, 60,000 feet of descent.. lots of sore muscles! Throw in a couple more ski days back home, plus a nordic day, and I actually ran only 12 miles last week!

Just enough snow coverage for me to bust out my Rossignol Omegas which were a $10 yard sale find (in Maryland!) many years ago. Nathan QuickStart vest is a good pick for nordic! I’m not experienced enough to have one of those swanky nordic waist packs. Btw, isn’t it difficult to pull the rear bottle out with those giant nordic poles in your hands?

I’m wearing this one right now as I’m typing this. Come to think of it, I haven’t even washed it yet! Seriously! About 10 runs so far, skiing, casual use.. legit one of my favorite pieces of winter apparel.

A couple of weeks of mixed winter sports use, and I’m totally sold.

Quick rundown of the key features:

• Fleece lined, quite warm on its own with a baselayer

• Integrated hood / vented facemask

• Thumb holes

• Watch window on both sides

• DWR coating (for light mist, very light rain maybe)

I wear a size Medium. The fit is a little bit boxy and loose around the torso for me, but I do have a thinner frame and long arms. I prefer the loose fit and my preference would be to wear this for everyday cold runs as an outer layer.

I didn’t actually wear it on that run, as it was a bit too sunny and warm out (the Cocoon 2.0 is quite cozy!)

There’s a reflective strip along the back which makes it great for those cold night runs. The seams on the front shoulders are also reflective.

The vented facemask is the TOP feature for me. You can see this is the third variation here - facemask up / hood down. You can keep the entire thing down as a kind of loose buff, or use the hood with the mask down, or have both the hood and the mask up. Very versatile and great for varying conditions and levels of body warmth!

This is one of my favorite pieces of winter sports apparel right now - I’ve also used it as a ski layer, as well as casually since it looks so nice!

norda was on fire in 2025. Still lots of love for the OG 001 - with an upgraded midsole. Viewers seem to be quite interested in comparisons when considering dropping this kind of coin.

norda sizing is notoriously tricky. They run short across the board, but also variations in volume and width in their models. Heel padding too of course! Based on watch time, many other runners might be confused too..

Got a few test runs in with some new models from Speedland. The GS:BLK above, and the RX:FPY below

The RX:FPY has been out for some time, but it’s my first time trying out Speedland on the road. That UNCOMPRESSED super critical midsole foam really does feel great underfoot, and it has a different (for Speedland) ride with an aggressive front toe sweep.

The fit is giving me some trouble though - there’s only a single BOA and you don’t have much control over isolating tension in different areas of the upper. Perhaps some custom mods may help here?

The BLK on the other hand, maintains the dual BOA setup. This allows me to keep the lower part of the shoe a bit looser, which works better for me. Fit also seems a bit different as I’m pretty good in a US 9.5 where as I feel equally comfortable in my GL:PDX in US 9.0. More to come in my full review of both models.

Perhaps the best fit (for me) is on the way from Speedland.. I really love the upper strap design in the PDX, and that will be a big feature of their upcoming “Gravel”/hybrid RX:LDVL model.

Next up, continued testing of the upcoming 2026 Mammut models, this time their long distance model, aptly named the Aenergy Trail Endurance Ultra.

This one features a combo eTPU/SC EVA midsole blend with an embedded dual-forked Pebax plate.

Lots of protection underfoot, but maybe not the fleetest feel on foot during my first test run. This one feels like it may require some break-in time.

With the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 still fresh on my mind, I was able to recall a couple of test pairs (V1 and Max) that I had passed off to others to try out. This roundup discusses the updated fit of the Prodigio 2 as well as differences between all 4 Prodigio models.

With all the different shoe testing and some time off (see below), I’ve only gotten a couple test runs in this shoe so far. Much more to come through the winter and into the spring.

Next up.. disaster.. some untimely crouching/twisting actions while cutting bathroom floor tiles - left me laid up with my low back all locked up.

Six days of no running (outside), which was pretty torturous given our non-winter weather so far, temps in the 50s and even close to 60F!!! A gradual ramp-up on the treadmill did improve the situation.

I knocked out my version of a “Best of 2025” video - focused on all of the shoes I ACTUALLY RACED in throughout the 2025 season. I have many TOP options to choose from, so you know these picks are legit!

Hopefully, I’ll be doing some testing of the full Salomon Trail lineup in 2026, starting with the Ultra Glide 4. I’m very impressed especially with the upper/fit of this one, as you can probably tell by the thumbnail/title. The Ultra Glide 4 is also available in WIDE.

Santa brought me a new drone.. some cool angles coming in 2026!

Don’t forget to check out my review of the NNormal Kjerag 02. Let me know what comps you’d like to see for this one. I’ve gotten mixed comments about this shoe (as expected). I find the fit and ride works for me, better than the original 01, but this shoe/ride is definitely NOT one-size-fits-all.

Friday - Hoka Mach X 2

Fitting to start off with an outdated model. But I haven’t been feeling the Mach X 3 - at least in the same way I was using the X 2 - for my speed workouts, especially on the treadmill.

Yes, the X 3 is a solid shoe, but the weight has increased, and it definitely leans more super trainer than speed shoe. I did a quick scan to see if I could get V2 cheap and alas, $120 all-in from Running Warehouse

I have 579(!) miles in my first pair, I know I can fix the heel with a felt pad, so it’s a no brainer at this price. I did size up to a US 10, as Hoka sent my first pair in a US 9.5. I’ll see if the heel issue is any better with the bigger size.

Saturday - Kiprun Kipsummit Max

Luckily the Kiprun test pairs showed up on Thursday, so I was able to take one of these gems home. The Kiprun shoes were probably the ones I was most excited to try out, based on first impression.

Winter has not hit yet in Idaho, so I got to enjoy some blue skies and shorts temperatures for this test run. It was so nice.. why not double up and test out another highly anticipated shoe..

Saturday #2 - La Sportiva Prodigio 2

The Prodigio lineup has been a slam dunk for La Sportiva, but the original (V1) was rightly overshadowed by the Pro and the Max. The main update here is the wider fit in the toebox and making the ankle/heel collar a no fuss area. It’s more of a mountain shoe now that slots in well alongside the other two. Check out my combo “First Runs” video below -

Sunday - Kailas FUGA EX 330

I put a good number of test miles in this shoe pre-TRE, and I was planning to do the review earlier, but I’ve been having slight issues with some arch irritation in my right foot when running in this shoe.

I picked up some insoles from FootWave at TRE, so I wanted to see if they helped, and YES! They worked like a charm - more support around the midfoot, they kind of saved the EX 330 for me as far as using them going forward. More below in my full review..

Sunday Night - Lems Radmaker

I know Lems made lifestyle models, but I never knew much about them. They are introducing their first road models in Fall 2026. Their focus is on a wide toebox and the somewhat natural running space.

This is a close-to-production model, and I’ll be giving some feedback towards the final tweaks. I did a quick treadmill run just to feel them out - I like a solid, stable shoe with a comfy toebox for non-workout runs on the treadmill (Mount to Coast R1/H1 for example).

First feedback tidbit - I like that under/over dual eyelet setup on the second row from the top. Good way to lock down the top of the midfoot and heel.

Monday - Saucony Ride 19

I actually didn’t get to check out much from Saucony (really too much for one person to see at TRE!), but they were giving these out, so I picked one up.

It’s a solid, energetic (in a cushy way), neutral daily trainer. I took them out for an hour and close to 8 miles, and they were pretty smooth and comfortable.

Even mixed in a little bit of dirt, just for kicks.

Tuesday - Kailas FUGA EX 330

Went to an area that I haven’t visited in quite a while. I knew where would be some overgrowth but I also found a fun steep climb and descent.

and Hoka Mafate 5

These are certainly two models that match up well in the heavy-ish, but ready-to-protect-the-feet-for-long-miles department. They approach the situation in different ways though, and you’ll likely prefer one or the other - my thoughts here..

Wednesday - The North Face Altamesa 500 V2

I had gotten many questions about V1, and now I know what all the fuss was about. This is a smooth cruiser, and now even lighter than V1. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some TNF Pros choosing this model for racing in 2026.

For my second run, I wanted to try them out on a flat canal path, and yep, top contender in the “gravel” segment too. Clipped along for 40 minutes at 7:30/mi easy pace.. feeling easy.. TNF! 2026!

I was also trying out my Kogalla Ra waistlamp (that I just found in) my Raide UL 1L belt. Btw, don’t rely on an 8 year old for footage.

Thursday - Kiprun Kipsummit Race

Ok time to get serious - ALERT - new trail super shoe contender on the way! Yes, Kiprun is for real with this Race model. Check out my IG grid for some quick screen grabs of shoes that I think are comparable.

This shoe feels amazing on foot - it has all the ingredients to be a top shoe in 2026. Much, much more to come with this one, watch my First Run here -

Friday - Brooks Glycerin Flex

This time I have to give credit to my daughter. I didn’t know what to expect from this one, and had them on for a quick trip to pick up some takeout. She wanted to race me down the block, and they felt really interesting in that 20 second stint! Btw, I beat her, but she did blow a tire (lost a Croc around halfway).

Next day, I’m out on the road/dirt for a quick 7 miler. Really fun shoe to run in - does anyone remember the Brooks “Pure” models???

Saturday - NNormal Kjerag 02 (x 2)

I took these out for a quick, cold hour in the morning, just with the intention of feeling them out. I honestly wasn’t crazy about the out-of-the-box step-in feel, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep them. But of course I had to try them on the run..

Next thing you know, my afternoon opened up, and the temps warmed up, so I decided to go out again in the afternoon for another round!

Sunday - Mammut Aenergy Trail All Mountain

Mammut will be entering the trail running market in 2026. I’ve got a sampler of all three models they will be releasing this Spring.

The “All Mountain” model lands in the “middle” of their trio of models. The other two models are appropriately named “Speed” and “Endurance”. I knocked out 13.1M in these today - interesting setup here - lots of protection in the mid/rear and lots of ground feel up front. I think it will be fun do dissect a full three-model lineup at the same time.

More details to come on all three of these models, I’ll be mixing them into my testing over the next couple months and look out for full reviews early in the year ahead of the release. (Yes, they will have various colorways).

End of 2025, into 2026

No, it is not normal for me to be running in so many different shoes over the course of 10 days or so. Obviously, post-TRE I have a flood of new and exciting shoes and gear/tech to try out (stay tuned!), and being that I don’t have an impending race on the calendar.. why not have at it?

Yea, that’s TNF’s signature Dream Foam. Yea, that’s a lot of it. Specs say 36/30mm, but I measure 41mm at the heel.. so there.

From 2025 and now into Spring 2026 (Altamesa scheduled release), I have not met a TNF upper that I haven’t liked. But they might have outdone themselves here. The 500 features a roomy toebox that just begs for long miles.

Only essential materials too, as the weight comes in at 10.3 oz (292g) in my US 10.0 (that’s not a lot for what’s going on underfoot here).

WIDE base. SURFACE CTRL. 4mm lugs

Not your standard Vectiv rocker here - more stability, less “roll-y”, with a very apparent rocker up front at the toes.

So, want to go for a run?

Hard to compete with the On Cloudultra Pro, but the “regular” Cloudultra 3 does a good job, and costs quite a bit less. It’s a great training option with perhaps range for racing if you want to be a bit closer to the ground. Check out my full comparison -

I decided to take the camera out for a quick hill interval workout session. The Nordlite Ultra Pro has a geometry that really works well going uphill, find out why here -

More uphills here, no intervals, just a steady climb up the street in the Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx. This is another one that just feels really solid and comfortable when the grade increases. I compare its geometry to the Nordlite Ultra Pro and discuss why they both work for hills.

Waist Belts are IN in 2025! Yes, I’m officially a convert, thanks to the quality of designs in this space. These are my personal "Best Running Belts” and I break down all the features and what I think are the best scenarios for each of them.

Another A/B/C test here.. one that I had in mind since I started testing both the Seek and the Roam from Keen. They’re clearly competitors in the wide toe box market segment against Topo and Altra. How do they STACK up against the new Vista? Each of these shoes are very similar, but there’s a specific feel and niche for each of them..

Finally got my feet into a trail running shoe from Lowa. Definitely an alpine-oriented shoe here, and a good one at that. I’ve had a bunch of fun runs in these and have a feeling they’re going to stay on my rotation rack for the upcoming winter months. Stay tuned for more Lowa testing in 2026!

This is one beast of a shoe - surely a contender for those very long and rugged ultra distances. TOR 330? Distinct feeling of cushion throughout, especially around the forefoot, and no sacrificing outsole grip and protection here! Full Review is coming soon!

FUGA DU 2

I’ve been working through the miles in the 330, so this on is on hold for the moment. It’s heavier, with a bit of built in stability for very rugged terrain. I’ll have full comparisons across the FUGA models I have in for test.

Nitecore Lighting & POWER

Lots of Nitecore tech and lighting in for test. UT27 and HC60 UHE headlamps, plus a 6K Carbon Battery Kit and NB10000 Carbon battery bank. Days are short now, so I’m definitely getting those night runs in.

I have not run in a Nathan Vest in a while. First off - these fit. In the past I’ve had problems getting a small enough size in Nathan vests.

If you want the absolute lightest, most form-fitting, no bounce running belt - it’s hard to top the new Raide UL 1L. Yes, UL does stand for Ultra Light! A race day option, and I’d say even a top pick for road marathons - it’s probably best to be carrying your own fuel on race days.

Rabbit Runners pants - $80

These have been my go-to fall running pants (although it’s been warm recently). Tapered just right at the ankles, lighweight material, and super stretchy. You’ll forget you have material covering your legs!

You’ve seen this one in a lot of my cool/cold weather runs (I actually have 2). So versatile, the double zipper is a standout feature for venting. And the soft collar/hood is great when you’re not sure if you need a buff or a beanie just yet, or even to just add on top of those if it’s colder.

First, a bit of a vacation roundup - focusing on the shoes I took with me to Germany. Of course the Hoka Rocket X 3 for the marathon, plus my choices for travel comfort and all-around versatility. I also look at some gear & apparel in for test, which is featured throughout the following videos..

I do have to quickly point out a couple of picks from Rabbit, as they have been exceptional, and staples in my rotation since receiving them. Above is the Layer One Trail Shirt - just a great all around top for cooler weather (more details here).

Also the Rabbit Runners pants. I’m a big fan of a lightweight outer layer once it gets too cold for shorts, and these are one of the easiest and most comfortable to run in.

Is GOREWEAR really going out of business??? I’m not trying to be a news reporter here, but I just got their pretty nice Concurve GORE-TEX jacket to test out, and this news dropped shortly after. Apparently they will still be focusing on the materials side. Still, kind of a bummer.

Matchup of trail titans here - the Mount to Coast H1 vs Norda 005. Can the Mount to Coast punch up and challenge the 005 - at less than half the price??? I have some thoughts.. and I talk through them on the trail as usual. Still love my 005s, but check out this downhill segment - the H1 can handle some trail!

Getting back into some Craft Xplor Pro testing after focusing mostly on the Norlite Ultra Pro, including racing that model at the Mammoth 50K. Two totally different models here, the Xplor Pro, heavier and ready to grind up some gravel underfoot.

Also check out this lacing trick I learned if you want to dial in the fit of different zones on your shoe! I used a similar technique to dial in the fit of my Keen Seeks.

Been doing a lot of waist belt running recently, which is crazy because I’ve never been a waist belt fan. Credit Raide for that - the LF 2L is an incredible belt - the first belt I’ve run in with truly zero bounce.

The UL 1L gives a lighter weight option, and for me a tighter squeeze. Watch this video to see what I think about it and if it’s an option along with the LF 2L and when it could possibly be a better pick.

From the (Ultra Light) UL model (btw, LF stands for Light & Fast), to the Kiprun 15L Ultra Trail Running Hydration Vest. Sometimes you need to carry a little, and sometimes a lot.

You saw this one earlier in my “UTMB Stair Workout” video. It can handle some weight! Could be a good one for some winter sports too with the higher capacity.

I dropped 4:40 off my marathon PR (April 2022). No, I have not been secretly road training - I guess it just goes to show that fitness is fitness, no matter the terrain or surface. I’m a little older, but definitely feeling generally fitter than the last time I ran a marathon.

My “crash” marathon training did seem to work out - nothing faster than marathon pace in the week before the race. Was it the broccoli? I mentioned nomio in my last newsletter -

It really did give me confidence in a workout I did one week before the race. I felt so comfortable running around what I thought would be my race pace. On race day I ran even faster! I’m totally sold on this one, and I’ll personally be stocking up on some more before my next races.

I did a roundup video covering some shoes that I featured in my last newsletter. Definitely a few contenders for my list of top shoes of the year here. In addition to the Hoka Rocket X 3, I brought the Mount to Coast H1 and Keen Seek on my trip to Germany. Perfect travel shoes! I’ll have some more recap in an upcoming Q&A.

I get some questions about training from time to time, so I filmed a video on a topic of high interest to me. If you’re feeling like strength may be a missing link in your training and racing - check this one out. Lots of discussion about muscular endurance in the ultra world these days, this workout is my interpretation of how that focus can help your running.

I had the very special opportunity to have a pair of custom insoles made in Germany. Check out this video for a recap, and to see the process. This is not hyperbole - I’m pretty sure you have not seen anything like this before!

Ever wonder how effective those running store foot scans really are? Notice the difference in detail around the balls of the foot. The impression on the right is a sample of the ones I did at the beginning of the process.

I didn’t do as much exciting adventure running on this trip - as my legs were feeling pretty tight after the marathon. I gradually ramped up during the week, this is a quick local route.

I test out and discuss some gear that I brought along with me - Peak Performance Freelight Wind Jacket and Creepers Merino Wool Boot Socks.

We also did a family hike up to the Kampenwand.

Pretty fun route, not too crazy - a little bit exposed but maybe not for those with any fear of heights.
