I’m just happy to be injury-free again - it’s been great just knocking out the training miles, adventure runs, and just having fun running in general over the past few months.

Hopefully, I can have a “Big Day” out there, in whatever shape or form that ends up taking. I’ve been mostly focusing my shoe & gear testing recently on the race - gear, apparel, and of course shoes that will carry through 100 rugged miles in the Idaho wilderness.

I’ve always loved the header on the race website - I think it captures the foreboding nature of the race!

norda x Black Diamond Collab

Highlighted by the all new norda 000, this collaboration brings Black Diamond’s deep mountain hertitage together with one of the hottest brands in the trail game. Judging by this collection of gear - I can’t wait to see what they come up with in the future.

The Distance 15L is definitely the most advanced “mountain pack” that I’ve used, and the Mission 30L duffel will surely be part of the pack kit for a long, long time. Throw in a norda-accented set of FKT Z-Poles, and you have a dynamite adventure kit.

norda Fit Guide - 2026 Update

With the 000 being unique mashup - think modified 002 upper paired with 001/001A midsole (but new Vibram formulation), on top of the more rugged 5mm outsole setup - it was time for an updated norda sizing roundup..

My key takeaway is that I’m going to start going with US 10.5 sizing for all norda models going forward. I consider that a full size up from true to size for me. I’ve just been too borderline snug with several models at a half size up (US 10). Of course foot shapes and sizing is so unique, so I go in depth with side-by-side comparisons so you can judge for yourself.

Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2

Not the S/LAB Genesis update I expected. Less ultra, more super-dialed technical fit here..

Good thing I got the chance to take them out in the Sawtooths for an extremely steep / off trail / vertical route. The S/LAB Genesis 2 in its new configuration really shined!

If you are considering this model, I would definitely check this one out to get an idea of the terrain that I think this shoe is designed to handle (well)!

Hoka Tecton X 4 - BIG Test Run(s)

Like my norda x BD overnight adventure trip, I got another chance to get away and bank some solid miles (and vert) in the new Hoka Tecton X 4. It’s definitely a refinement of X 3, but with a few small but noticeable differences.

For one, I had to go a half size up from V3 - it just feels a little more tapered up front. The plates are different here, which I feel gives more ground feel, but a less poppy ride than the X 3 (amazing deal here if your size is left). A new Matryx Micro upper material opens up some questions marks here for me - stay tuned to the end!

Teva Trailpeak - A Lightweight Option

Yes, it seems like lightweight, unplated shoes are making something of a comeback! The all new Teva Trailpeak certainly fits the bill. Check my PandaPrank comparison roundup further below to see what I mean..

Very impressive from Teva straight out the gate - this is essential their first trail running shoe. I’ve gotten a look at some prototype updates to this model that Teva is working on - I think you’ll want to keep an eye on Teva Trail Running!

Mount to Coast Lacing Guide featuring M1

The Mount to Coast M1 seems to be a bit polarizing, both in terms of fit and also with their signature TUNEDFIT lacing system. But rest assured, you have options! Here I show you a couple of things you can do to “tune your fit” including a little lacing trick that is helpful for any running shoe.

They’re just shoelaces.. it’s not that big of a deal.. I’ve swapped many a set of laces for ones that I like, way before Mount to Coast came on the scene. I always recommend to save the ones you like and try them in other shoes if something feels off.

norda 055 G+ Adventure

Second of back-to-back runs in the Sawtooths. Again - tons of vert, off trail, this time following a ridge towards a hidden lake (no the picture below is not color edited). How does 9 miles with 5,280 feet of vert sound?

The norda 005 G+ was certainly not as stable and dialed as the S/LAB Genesis 2 - but they will certainly keep the feet happier and comfortable for much longer in rugged mountain terrain. Could this be a race pick for IMTUF?

PandaPrank ?!?!?

Speaking of running 100 miles - would it be crazy to pick a brand new shoe that I just took out of the box? Enter the PandaPrank Orbis..

Yes, it is that kind of shoe! Amazing for a brand that I had literally never heard of before.. with good reason.. this is their first running shoe! Check out this video for all the details and you can probably tell from the thumbnail what kind of company this shoe keeps in my mind..

La Sportiva Prodgio Pro ($168)

Perhaps the most popular and talked about shoe over the past nearly two years now. Prodigio Pro 2 is imminent for 2027, so stock up on the current Prodigio Pro at this price! Many reviews and comparisons on the channel - check them out!

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 ($127)

Compared to the Pro model, the “regular” Prodigio 2 is less bouncy, has more toebox space, and a bit more protection for training on rocky and technical trails.

Keen Seek ($138) / Keen Roam ($115)

Keen is relatively new to the performance trail running scene. For those looking for a more natural style toebox with a secure midfoot hold - Keen is the brand for you. The Seek is more energetic and perhaps race-ready, while the Roam leans towards comfort and cushion for easier cruising.

Keen Wander ($105)

Keen’s newest model, the Wander - dials up the ground feel. There’s a flexible rock plate in the mix, but this model extends the natural experience under the foot. A great option for running, hiking, and all around outdoor use. I’ll have a full review of the Wander soon!

Hoka Tecton X 3 ($169)

The new Hoka Tecton X 4 just came out, so this one is now discontinued. There are non-major changes in the X 4 (check out my full review), but if the X 3 worked for you - I’d jump on these while they last!

Merrell MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx ($124)

Kind of a classic at this point - a somewhat minimalistic ride gives you a connected feel in what I’ve called an “old school” package. They don’t make too many shoes like the MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx anymore!

Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx ($121)

I did a feature video on the MTL Adapt Matryx - specifically because it feels so supportive under the middle/rear, making it a great option for tackling long uphills. The overall ride is energetic, with a big rocker up front to move things along.

Arc’teryx Sylan 2 ($175)

The revamped Arc’teryx Sylan 2 is perhaps one of the top technical mountain shoes - if you want to run fast! A new carbon plate plus super dialed fit make this a top pick for mountain running especially with the fall/winter seasons coming up. Look out for a comparison against the new Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2 - these two are close cousins.

Arc’teryx Norvan LD 4 ($135)

Another shoe that I give the “classic” designation is the Arc’teryx Norvan LD 4. No frills, no fuss, a versatile ride for pretty much any type of trail. It’s hard to nail down any specific whiz bang feature of this shoe, but it just works! Check out this adventure run for proof!

Craft Xplor ($99)

This is the only shoe on this list that I haven’t reviewed, but I did test the Xplor Pro model (not on sale). I thought it was worth listing here due to the price, plus the extra 20% off coupon is applicable. That’s $80 for the “regular” Xplor, which has the same foam as the Pro model.

The REI Labor Day Sale & Clearance is going on now through September 7. This is a great time to stock on on some proven models before they go away to make way for updated ones. These are just a few of my picks - let me know if you see anything else awesome in the sale.

There’s a few “all rounders” in the mix here though, and a new lightweight option - the Teva Trailpeak (Available September 1). It will be interesting to see how this latest foam tech works across different styles of shoes, especially light and fast varieties.

I did forget one model though - the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite Trail. This was actually the first ATPU trail model that I’ve run in, so apologies to Puma for leaving it out. But to be fair, I don’t think Puma did a great job highlighting the ATPU aspect when this shoe first came out. Given the growing consumer recognition these days, I don’t think brands will make that mistake any more!

Speedland RX:LDVL

I mentioned this in my last newsletter, but I’ll reiterate - my favorite Speedland shoe ever! The new ATPU midsole makes this shoe GO and I think, completely enhances the ride and platform!

If you’ve watched my Speedland videos - you know I’m a “strap” fan - and it works great here - also the most secure fit I’ve had in a Speedland shoe to date!

On Cloudultra Peak - Idaho Race Course Tested

Another adventure style video - filmed a couple weeks ago over in Sun Valley in between some volunteer shifts and the Standhope Ultra Challenge. How did the On Cloudultra Peak handle the rugged route back and forth from Surprise Valley?

I think this new light and agile setup from would be able to handle this type of race (60k). But don’t expect big “Cloudultra Pro” cushion here - this one is ready to dance!

Nike ACG Kit - “Chamo Camo” & more

INOV8 Trailfly Pro

This shoe, and INOV8 as a brand - if it’s not already - or if it was before and dropped off at some point.. needs to be back on your trail radar!

The Trailfly Pro (available now in the UK) is definitely one of my top picks for 2026 - blending their “natural performance philosophy” with well.. actual high performance. The all new POWERFLOW ELITE midsole foam here is the star - bringing high energy to the ride on top of INOV8’s signature natural platform.

This is a bit of a long one, but well worth the watch (I say).

IN FOR TEST - ANTA C202 G9

If you haven’t heard about the brand ANTA yet - you should probably get up to speed. They have a wide range of WILD models - both in terms of features and looks! Just take a browse over their performance models.

They’re calling the C202 G9 a marathon racer, but it’s insanely light and seems more suited to even faster shorter distance running. It has a full carbon plate sandwiched within a supercritical nitrogen infused midsole.

I did also spy some trail models at TRE last year, which are not available in the North American market just yet..

Rabbit Apparel

Rabbit has a new FastRock collection - (short sleeve tee seen below), featuring cool mountain-silhouetted designs. Kind of a cool mountain peak shape along the bottom of the shirt. I’ve also got a a lightweight jacket to try out, but it’s been nowhere near jacket weather yet.

Comfy and sweet looking socks too!

Keen Wander

If you’re looking for a lightweight, super durable, versatile shoe - with eco-conscious design and style to match - the new Keen Wander could be for you!

Low stack, with a rock plate in the mix to blunt sharp impacts - this is not your typical cushy cruiser. I love the style of this colorway especially - it’s been a great everyday shoe so far. I’m particularly impressed with the detail and construction quality - it looks extremely solid and well-made.

Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2

I’m thinking about something different here - maybe a Pre-First Run Impressions video? Based on inspection and just trying on the Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2 for the first time, I feel like there’s already a lot to talk about.

Actually.. I couldn’t help it and ran a little sunset half marathon in them last night. But my thoughts still stand! So look out for that one..

ACG Solar Chase

Nike sent me a couple of shirt samples and a pair of “Chamo” shorts to match. The shirts use their DRI-FIT ADV material - which is their more performance-oriented material - providing advanced fit and materials engineering.

It’s a cotton/poly blend - so not your typical ultralight engineered material - it has a pleasing soft feel on the body. I’ve actually been keeping these in my “regular” t-shirts drawer, not the running one!

Solar Chase in Light Crimson shown above.. Hang out all day in style, then keep it on for the run! The solid prints have a perforated mesh in the rear and under the arms.

The new “Chamo” print model has perforated mesh under the arms and the regular material (printed camo) on the back.

There’s also a unique split at the hem which I kind of dig.

The material absorbs moisture, but dries out quickly. I thought I would be completely soaked by the end of my runs, but I was surprisingly dry (note- humidity is quite low here in Boise). I’m finding these to be stylish tees for all types of scenarios - both on trail and off.

I have both shirts in my typical size Medium for tops. Perfect sizing and fit for me.

ACG “Chamo Camo” Trail Running Shorts

I don’t know.. for me it’s a bit much to be running around in the full top & bottom “Chamo” kit. One at a time is good for me, otherwise around here people might think I’m out on a hunt.

The ACG “Chamo Camo” shorts come in a 6” length with a brief liner. There are two rear pockets, divided in the middle - useful for the usual small items, I could get 2-3 gels comfortably in each, depending on the size.

You’ve also got standard side pockets up front, making this a useful short for non-running activities where you might need to bring your phone/wallet/keys along for a quick stop.

I do like the fact that the drawstring ties on the outside of the waistband. C’mon brands - this should be standard!

The two pockets in the back are fine for a short run, but you can always throw on your favorite waist belt for longer outings. The flat waistband and outside drawstring make this a comfortable setup.

I’m wearing a size Medium here and I’m landing just on the low end of that sizing. Size Small would likely be too snug.

Mount to Coast M1 - another one of the most anticipated trail shoes of 2026 - quite amazing coming from a brand that not too long ago didn’t make trail shoes at all!

Lots to dig into with these - of course check out my FULL review. Definite comfort fit and comfort cushion underfoot.. I put these through the ringer with some steep climbing and a burly off trail descent.

There may be limits in the most technical terrain, but are there any limits in terms of distance? Mount to Coast’s tagline is “Transcend Distance” right?

NNormal Cadí - For the People

“Kilian’s brand” finally comes out with a shoe designed for those with “not quite Kilian” feet.. I’ve been trying to get my feet into these for a while, and now that I finally have a test pair - they have not disappointed.

A big departure from NNormal’s Kjerag model - the Cadí features all around plush-ness, made to log miles in comfort. I was surprised to see some comments mentioning “firmness” underfoot, which has not been my experience. The wide base under the forefoot provides ample ground feel, so perhaps that could be what some are feeling.

If you were NNormal-curious, but perhaps not so sure about their more racy & precise-fitting model lineup, the Cadí might just be your entry point.

Salomon Genesis 2 & Kila Custom Insoles

This just felt like a natural pairing to me, with the Genesis 2’s ride seemingly leaning more towards mountain running than the previous V1.

The Kila Custom Insoles seem to add a bit of transition (and protection) around the middle of the shoe - enhancing the Genesis 2’s all mountain ride.

This was a classic route up in the Sawtooths, which you might have seen in a couple other videos.

A true mountain test in varied terrain, with scenery and views to match!

BOOM! Hitting the Road!

I’ve been feeling good these days, just in time to test out On’s new flagship road racer, the On Cloudboom Strike 2.

I may not quite be up to marathon racing speed, but I’m feeling good enough to start getting back into speed work, and boy, these do feel speedy!

They also look simply spectacular, featuring a full length Carbon Speedboard, and a unique drop-in upper midsole (Helion HF).

In this video I also discuss what makes trail “super shoes” different from their road counterparts. Hint- trail shoes have a lot more to deal with (DUH). But perhaps interesting to talk it through.

On has a stout road/trail super shoe combo here with the Cloudboom Strike 2 and the Cloudultra Pro. And perhaps the Cloudultra Peak for shorter distances? (more to come)

What’s IN FOR TEST?

I did a round up of the different shoes that I currently have in for test - there’s just so many great ones here, that it felt necessary to discuss standout features for each.

I’ve been loving my runs so far in the INOV8 Trailfly Pro (now available in the UK) - as discussed in this video - it has an amazing and for me, not felt before combination of very energetic foam and ground feel / flex up front.

I also just received my new size in the Hoka Tecton X 4 - I’m now at a US 10.5 (EU 44 2/3) in these - what I would call a full size up from true-to-size. They do fit well! Go back to this video to hear some thoughts on recent “supershoe” sizing.

Smartwool Apparel

I’ve been testing out some new apparel from Smartwool, including a refresher on socks. The shirts have been especially nice, and I’ve been wearing them for days at a time because I love the fit and look, plus merino wool does not retain odors. Check out my article for more details.

TOMORROW on Humble Running

Tune in for my full review of the Speedland RX:LDVL. I can say that this is definitely my favorite Speedland shoe so far. The upper strap works much better for foot security - it’s great to see that now in one of their higher stacked models.

But Smartwool does have a range of apparel - being merino-wool based, the first thing that comes to mind is base layers.. but turns out they have some pretty nice t-shirts too.

Active Mesh

The Active Mesh Short Sleeve features a slightly heavier fabric with strategic breathable mesh areas on the shoulders, sleeves, and back areas. The heavier weight makes it feel more plush and gives it a nice satisfying feel both on the run and during every day use.

There’s a bit of a curvature to the hem - it’s cut slightly higher at the sides, and again - this gives it a pleasing look and feel both when you’re standing still and also on the run.

I’m 5’10” with a 36” chest and I wear a size Medium. The fit was a bit looser initially, and it shrunk a tiny bit with the first few washes. If you’re in between sizes, I’d recommend going with the larger size.

Active Ultralite

The Active Ultralite Short Sleeve brings similar Smartwool tech - 53% Merino Wool, 47% TENCEL Lyocell - in a lighter weight package. The material is thinner, and there are no mesh panels here.

This is the performance option if you’re looking for a lighter feel on those hotter days. It floats around the body and the thin merino feels soft and smooth.

The great thing about the Merino Wool / TENCEL combination is that they don’t retain odor like synthetic fabrics. It was a hot day out as you can see from the pic above.. but I just hung this one up to dry, and it will be ready to go again tomorrow (or later in the day).

Socks too.. of course

This one is called “Neature Print” - it’s a Trail Run model with targeted cushion in the toe and heel area. I believe it’s essentially the same model as that years old pair shown at the top of the article.

Btw, their Trail Run model is a staple in my testing - I love the colors of the Reflections Print model. I break that one out whenever I find a good match with shoes I’m testing or whenever I want to add some pop to my kit.

Another model I’ve been trying out is their Zero Cushion Run model. I’ve had these before in quarter length (race giveaways), but I’m a crew length guy, and this is my first pair of these in the higher cut.

Sometimes you need to vary your sock thickness depending on the volume of the shoe you’re running in. It’s a good idea to have a few options from a brand that works well for you.

norda 055

Let’s wind it back to Alaska - I had some amazing adventure runs, taking advantage of the long summer evenings to hit some steep climbs, even after 10pm!

norda 055 was the focus initially, as I wanted to get some serious miles in these. I had a slow couple weeks after pulling my hamstring in the ill-fated Precision Fuel & Hydration 100m dash on the last day of TrailCon. But luckily after a gradual 2 week recovery, I was back in the groove for this trip!

It wouldn’t be an Alaska adventure without some wildlife - I ran in to a moose and calf on my very first Alaska run. I kept my distance for a while, and actually turned around and took another route down.

I also teamed up with Brett over at Conversational Pace for a review on CP - check that one out too!

The North Face Offtrail Ultra

Another shoe, perhaps tailor-made for Alaskan running (and more!) is The North Face Offtrail Ultra. I did similar steep routes, a run/hike up the Harding Glacier, and the classic Lost Lake route.

There was nothing that could stop the Offtrail Ultra - I’m very high on this shoe right now, probably going to end up as one of my top shoes of 2026.

It has an agile feel to it, but a surprisingly wide and stable base. Combined with the new Dreambound midsole and a solid upper (including gaiter), and you’re all set for pretty much any trail adventure.

Rossignol Vercors

A quick stop back home to test out another alpine-oriented shoe, the Rossignol Vercors. I have to admit that I was initially put off by the snug fit up front, but luckily with correct sizing (full thumbs with up front) - it actually holds the foot really well and I don’t get overly squeezed.

Rossignol is completely new to me, and this shoe has a lot of good things going on. I can see them becoming a big player in those types of Euro-style trails as they dial in their trail designs.

Salomon Genesis 2

Our trip to the Sawtooths was interrupted by some flash flooding in the area - as the landscape has been greatly affected by the Wapiti Fire in 2024.

The road out from where we camped was actually blocked by a mud/rockslide for close to two days. I explored the area in the new Salomon Genesis 2, and was able to hit up one of the classic Grandjean routes - stay tuned for that review soon.

Luckily for us (but very unfortunately for others), we left before another round of storms came through and wiped out the Trailhead/campsite area that you’ve seen in these as well as my previous Sawtooth videos.

Stay tuned for the highly anticipated (and overdue) S/LAB Genesis 2 as well - from my testing of the “regular” Genesis 2, I can see how a tuned-up version could be pretty awesome. I do have an S/LAB test pair inbound!

Nike ACG Zegama Trail / Radical AirFlow

So much to talk about while I was testing the Nike ACG Zegama Trail as well as Radical Airflow - I had to split it into two parts. These are a mix of scenic and adventure runs with some shoe and gear reviewing along the way.

Don’t miss the full wet testing in Part 1, and some steep up/down testing in Part 2. Lots of other gear and fueling tidbits as well that you won’t want to miss.

Janji Ultrahauler Supertote

Speaking of which.. you need to haul.. er.. tote your gear. The Janji Ultrahauler Supertote (40L) has legit become part of my daily running gear. Any time I need to head out for a run and pack some stuff, it gobbles up everything. See what I’ve got in my bag in the video above.

And speaking of Janji.. man, this one has to be my favorite shirt? running shirt? casual shirt? what is it? of all time.. I’ve gotten complements out on the trail a few times already, it’s a keeper - Janji Trekker Snappy Shirt.

Standhope Volunteering

I said 3 jam packed weeks of adventure.. this past weekend I headed over to volunteer at the Standhope Ultras - I helped out at the 100M start and the 60K finish - races I’ve done in the past, so I figured it was time to give back.

I was able to squeeze in some runs before and in between my shifts. I didn’t make it up to Standhope Pass due to time constraints, but I got high enough.. with a great valley view!

It was perfect terrain to take out the new On Cloudultra Peak. My earlier demo run was on the smoother ski hill track at Olympic Vally. This route was decidedly - not smooth.

Speaking of steep, how about some off-trail Mount to Coast M1 testing? Perhaps not what the shoe is designed for, but why not?

And for good measure.. the third moose I’ve come across in 3 weeks - this time a bull. This was about 9:30pm and quite dark, I used night sight on my phone to brighten it up.

I had to wait this guy out for a good 15 minutes as that trail between us was my only route back.

The Broken Arrow course was absolutely spectacular - so challenging in different ways.. Huge climbs, runnable parts up high, steep descents, and technical sections that dared you to run fast and stay upright at the same time.

I managed to come away unscathed (sort of - more on that later). Well at least the injury that I’ve been coming back from didn’t flare up at all. My left leg felt totally fine, no issues at all which was a huge relief. Fitness on the other hand, or lack thereof..

Let’s just say I’m itching to get back into actual training where I can build myself up as opposed to just working back towards some semblance of a baseline.

I put together a couple of race recap videos across all three events (Ascent, 46k, 23k) - with clips from out on the course in case you’ve never experienced it.

I didn’t take clips from the final ascent up the Stairway to Heaven. Each time I was totally gassed by that point, and it was definitely the smart (and safe) call to use my hands to keep my balance and grab the railings sometimes.

Perhaps you haven’t heard of this one - the new On Cloudultra Peak, which just released today. Not sure what’s going on over at On, but this one just kind of snuck out, with nowhere near the fanfare and build up like last season’s Cloudultra Pro.

On the drive over to California, I stopped for a quick test run in Nevada in the new Adidas Terrex Agravic SL. Something tells me that this shoe may end up on more than a few “best of” lists when all is said and done in 2026.

norda 055 imminent

Mark your calendars, like and subscribe, hit the notification bell, do whatever you gotta do - the norda 055 will be officially released on July 9.

Check out my First Look video for the details to get you primed for the release. I’ll likely do some type of video when the shoe is released, but not a full review yet. I need more miles.

If you’re definitely planning on ordering - they fit similarly (sizing-wise) to the 005. I can say this confidently as I have the 055 in a US 10.0 and the 005 in both US 10 and 10.5. The size 10s definitely match. There are also definite differences between the uppers which I will detail in the next video - stay tuned!

Speedland Reviews & Updates

Check out my Shoes of Broken Arrow & TrailCon video for some details on upcoming Speedland models. My recent reviews of both the RX:FPY (I believe the same as the new RX:PNW) and GS:BLK models have been plagued by some fit issues.

Basically - I can’t get enough lock down with a single BOA, and with two BOAs, the upper BOA tends to dig into the side of my foot when the shoe twists on uneven terrain. Enter the RX:LDVL..

My favorite Speedland upper setup - the ankle STRAP! Loved this in the GL:PDX, and love it here. The TPEE midsole of the LDVL (stands for Leadville) is also a clear win - lots of energy, bounce, and seems to be quite a bit lighter. More to come here!

Fun & Games at TrailCon

Not everything was all fun & games at TrailCon. Well at least it started out that way - with the Precision Fuel & Hydration 100m (meter) dash..

I jumped into this one again since it was super fun last year. It was all smiles and jokes in the corral about not getting injured or pulling a muscle, and guess what happens to me..

Yea I pulled my hamstring! I actually made it to the second round like last year, had a better start this time, was in 3rd or 4th spot, then bang! Hamstring got me! I’ve never had a hamstring pull or strain before so this is totally new. It’s been a full week now, and I’ve gradually progressed into a slow/easy pace after a bunch of very demoralizing walk/jog sessions. I’ve also been on the indoor bike which has gradually improved day by day.

It’s strange because I can so acutely feel the tightness come on as the pace increases that I literally cannot run faster even if I wanted to, which is different than other injuries or niggles (usually you can grit your teeth and run through some irritation).

But I do think I avoided a serious injury as I finally did my first trail run last night. It feels like maybe another full week and it should be back to normal. Good timing anyway as I’ve got a fun family vacation coming up this week. I will see you back out on the trails very soon!

It was fun to dabble in some other activities - indoor cycling, inline skating, hiking, walking the dog. Also catching up on some projects around the house - my yearslong bathroom renovation saga, van(s) buildout, yard work, etc.

The North Face Altamesa 300 V2

For my first review back, and actually my first few reviews back, I leaned into more comfort oriented models. Shoes that I got a chance to use casually and put a lot of walking time into over the past month or so. First up, the 300 V2

This is one of those all-around-models that will suit all runners, especially those looking for a wide or high volume fit. This one is pretty much the definition of a “daily trail trainer”.

Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL

Kind of, sort of another daily trainer option - with a lot of BOUNCE. The Aero Glide 4 GRVL’s eTPU midsole is incredible here, a really fun and bouncy (there’s that word again) ride that just puts a smile on your face.

The upper is quite different from the road model though - more "trail space” leading to comfort, but is there enough foothold to go beyond “GRVL”?

ACT Running C.1

ACT’s description for the C.1 say it all, accurately - “high enrgy return and consistent cushioning, combining soft impact absorption with a controlled rebound.” *Bold/italics added by me.

I use that description as a basis throughout my review, because it just feels so on point. As you can imagine, that’s not always the case with the marketing materials that come with a running shoe. But ACT Running has hit the mark here with the C.1 - this is a serious performance shoe - with the sustainability cred to match!

Scarpa Golden Gate LT

European “light trails” are not the same as American “light trails”, see outsole below -

Whenever I see “LT”, “lite”, “light”, or “door-to-trail” etc. in a shoe’s name or description, a certain idea comes to mind. That idea certainly does not match the burly outsole you get underfoot with the Scarpa Golden Gate LT.

Surprisingly, Scarpa has some really good “door to trail” options - this one and the Golden Gate ATR 2. They don’t skimp on solid foothold either - that plus the outsole gives them range to get into more “real” trails.

Pao Labs Energy Jellies

Asian-American inspired energy jellies! Check those flavors - Yuzu, Lychee Oolong, Strawberry Matcha.. mmmmmm.. The playful and colorful branding caught my eye at TRE this year. I suspected that my daughter would love these - and she does!

My samples were gobbled up by my daughter and wife, but I did get to sample the flavors. All three are absolutely amazing, with Lychee being the consensus favorite (IYKYK). *Lychee not pictured below as my daughter likes to “save the best for last.”

The jelly-like consistency is also unique - not runny and syrupy like a lot of gels. The texture seems to enhance the flavors. If flavor fatigue is a thing in your gel rotation, or you have a little ripper in your household, give Pao Labs jellies a try! Humble Running Household recommended!

Topo Pursuit 3 x Trado Trail Gaiters

Sometimes reviews just fall into place. I was just about to wrap up my testing and film a Pursuit 3 review, when I got a chance to try out the new Trado Trail Gaiters. Perfect timing as Topo has now switched to a standard rear velcro attachment with the Pursuit 3.

This is a long one, but the route was worthy of it - and it was my first long-ish / adventure run since my injury. Fantastic Idaho scenery here!

Trail Gaiters Galore!

I of course need to test out Trado’s velcro/Future Glue setup, so I figured I’d create a setup that you’ll see later on (in some future race), and film the process.

Also fun to dig around in my gaiter bin and look at the different options that I personally use. I know gaiters can be a polarizing topic, but my thought is - if you need them, you need them.

Btw, the Trado gaiter design is very reminiscent of the most effective integrated ankle collar designs on the market.

Just some Hoka Testing

Very early stage Hoka Zinal 3 testing here, plus Hoka’s new 10L vest I’ve been itching to get into. I had Memorial Day weekend all to myself, so I planned a fun route and figured I’d just share some thoughts as I go.

What started out as a steamy 90F+ day turned into thunder and lightning pretty quickly. Hey, Humble Running is an ACTION channel! I managed to stay safe and dodge the worst of it. This video showcases the “greener” side of Boise trail running.

norda 005 vs NNormal Kjerag 02

Perhaps a bit of a refresher ahead of the hugely anticipated 055 release (see below). A comparison that has been heavily requested, so I figured it was the perfect time to do it.

The 005 is a given, but I have to say that the more I run in the Kjerag 02, the more I like it. The extra 2mm of midsole from V1 plus the switch to TPE foam makes a HUGE difference.

Leki Ultratrail FX.One Superlite poles

I was actually holding my testing of the Hoka 10L vest (with awesome integrated pole quiver), while I was waiting for these poles to arrive. I’m a huge fan of Leki and their signature Trigger Shark system. I haven’t raced with another pole in many years at this point.

My schedule is allowing my to get some daily steep reps in, so I’ve been using these almost daily. You’ll see these in a few upcoming videos (Speedland GS:BLK), and keep an eye out for a full review with some pole running tips later on!

norda 055 - has arrived!

Likely the most highly anticipated trail running shoe of 2026 - the norda 055 has arrived in the Humble Running mailbox! Thanks to norda for getting me this early test pair.

NOTE: The release date has not been finalized yet (you can ask, but I can’t answer, sorry). Once we get closer to the finalized date, look out for a full review on the channel.

Race to Robie Creek 2026

With my planned race scheduled for the week after Robie Creek, I had already planned to miss out this one. I had the idea to go over and catch some race vibes, and this was a good opportunity to check out runners’ shoe picks for this unique race.

Three-time champ Nate Souther went with the Hoka Rocket X 3 (my shoe pick for the Munich Marathon last Fall), while others opted for a wide array of trail & road shoes. This half marathon features 8 miles on dirt with 2,100 ft+ of elevation gain.

Kiprun Kipsummit Max Comparisions

The Hoka Speedgoat 7 vs Kiprun Kipsummit Max A/B test video ran long, so I broke out some comparisons into a separate video. Lots of different avenues to explore here from foothold, fit, sizing, and of course A-TPU midsole comparisons.

Btw, my ribs are just now feeling recovered from the spill I took during that A/B test run. But my right shoulder is still bothering me.

Running to Race?

4 full weeks off from running definitely gives you time to think about some stuff. Throw in missing out on a race you’ve been focusing on for months - and it was time for a vent session.

Now that I’m back running again, I’ll probably do a follow up to this one with some lessons learned.. or should I say - lessons that became apparent, which will hopefully “stick” going forward.

Thoughts on two Ultra Speedsters

Hoka Rocket X Trail and Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2 are two shoes that I had gotten miles in before my injury struck. Here I go for a hike and share my thoughts on both shoes.

These are two high-end runnable terrain ultra racers. But which shoe is the best pick for your next ultra?

Spring 2026 - In for Test

Shoes (and apparel) were starting to pile up while I was recovering. I share some impressions here on what I have in the testing queue - The North Face Altamesa 300 V2, Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL, ACT Running C.1, Scarpa Golden Gate LT, and Hoka Zinal 3.

Check recent videos on the channel to see which shoes I’ve picked for my first runs back. I’ve been going with shoes what have easy fits and easy rides - to match my gradual ramp up period.

Summer Running

We had very hot spell a couple weeks ago, which was a good chance to try out some summer sun apparel. Lightweight shirts from Salomon, CEP, and Stio.

Also in for test - INOV8 Trailfly V2 and Topo Pursuit 3. These two won’t be among my first choices as I get back into running, as they definitely ride like more natural-style shoes. But stay tuned for follow-ups once my legs, feet, and ligaments get back into the swing of things!

UltrAspire Traverse - 20 Liters

Everyone saw the Traverse (or hundreds? of these packs) out at Cocodona. You need to carry a lot of gear throughout a 250 mile race (DUH), and lots of fluids! I load up 5+ liters in this review and guess what? Rock solid!

Yes, UltrAspire has had a huge presence at Cocodona over the years, but you can’t deny the performance and capacity of this pack for those types of events.

Adidas TT - Coast to Coast

I was holding off on reviewing the Adidas TT - feeling like it really needed to be tested in true technical trails. I had to head back to New Jersey, and with no snow on the ground this time - I got to cover some of my old hometown trails.

It’s just so darn rocky over there, entirely different from here in Boise, and even many places out west. Just non stop rocks everywhere! The TT won’t be a shoe for everyone, but it worked really well running at the type of cadence and style that you need to handle “Beast Coast” terrain.

I missed my connecting flight back home, so I got to explore some trails within an Uber-ride from the San Francisco airport. More of a scenic fun run here - the TT held its own on the California Carpet.

On Cloudsoma

The title says it all - is an On shoe an On shoe without the PODS? The Cloudsoma replaces traditional Cloudtec pods with new Cloudtec Connect technology. With a unique articulating sensation underfoot - since this initial review, I’ve been digging them more and more.

If you’re interested in these, pay attention to my analysis of the upper. The sock-style design has quite a bit of volume to it. You might need to size down if you are in between sizes.

Training “Yards”

While keying in on the upcoming backyard race, I started doing some training sessions where I simulated the 4.1666 mile “yard” distance, with short breaks in between. In this session I did 4 “yards” in 4 different road models - just for fun!

#1 Salomon Aero Glide 4, #2 Brooks Glycerin Flex, #3 Speedland RX:FPY, #4 Mizuno Neo Zen 2. These are not actually models I planned to use in the event, but it was an effective session for testing and comparison. All 4 road shoes, but really no two close to being similar.

Craft Endurance 3

Another kind of simulated backyard session here - 2 x 7ish miles in the new Craft Endurance 3. 9mm drop here, which typically doesn’t agree with me, but I find this one to be quite smooth on varied terrain, including the treadmill.

Also some gear and apparel testing - the Hypervent Light Wind Jacket, also from Craft.

and some shades from Tifosi

Plus, for the sake of going hands-free on the road - let’s throw in the Nathan Aerozip 1L vest.

Fabric-like in fit, this shirt-vest(?) provides easy hydration access and storage pockets up front. This setup works well under a light shell as seen here, or you could go topless as the inner material is super-smooth.

BIG Speedgoat 7 Comparison

I might have jumped the gun earlier in calling the Kipsummit Max the natural evolution of the Speedgoat model. Then the Speedgoat 7 came out - and I now see these as two really great, adjacent models.

They are not the same shoe though - there are notable differences.

Wear Foehn

Premium apparel from Foehn in for test - I took a big spill towards the end of my Kipsummit Max / Speegoat 7 test run - and the Foehn kit proved to be quite durable!

I absolutely love the Cortes Delta shirt - the fabric feels fantastic and super premium. The Relais Shorts (2-in-1 style) have build in storage loops and pockets for multiple gels - more to come as I will certainly see how many I can pack in there. Stay tuned!

Scarpa Golden Gate LT

I discovered the Golden Gate LT one as I was browsing the Scarpa site. I hadn’t heard much about it, but it sparked my interest as I am a huge fan of the Golden Gate ATR 2.

This one has similar design cues, as well as a focus on Door to Trail running. I finally nailed my Scarpa sizing here - EU 43.5 (US 10). Previous Scarpa models that I’ve tested have also been tagged as US 10, but EU 43. Pay attention to Euro sizing - especially for Euro-based brands!

La Sportiva Prodigio Pro - Size Up!

The muddy end of my pristine white La Sportiva Prodigio Pros.. I sized up a full EU size here - 43.5 in my original black pair to 44.5 in the pair you see here. How did that work out? Hint - perhaps you have more leeway to size up than you think.

Brooks Cascadia Elite - New Contender

The Brooks Cascadia Elite is one of the heavy hitters of 2026. I find them versatile in a way that matches up with any trail super shoe on the market.

In this full review I decide on which sizing works best - my normal US 10, or my first-ever Brooks US 10.5. Also, a few VERY important comps at the end!

Mizuno Neo Accera - the surprise

I was totally expecting one of the Neo road shoes, so you can imagine the shock seeing this one pop out of the box. The Neo Accera is I believe the first serious trail shoe from Mizuno. Where does it land and more importantly, for a brand new model, what are some comparable shoes?

Btw, I did receive the Neo Zen 2 later in the week.

Arc’teryx Sylan 2 Q&A

This one is focused on comments from my Sylan 2 review. I got many questions specifically about the Prodigio Pro, but as you can see there were also some other comparisons. A lot of my favorite picks here, with most being very versatile trail options.

Adidas Speed 2

I did one quick trail “speed” workout in the new Speed 2 (5 x 8:00) - these are the real deal. Probably a unique shoe in that.. they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Reminds me a lot of the original “Speed Ultra”. This one is next up in my Adidas test queue.

Topo Pursuit 3

The Pursuit 2 was perhaps my favorite zero drop trail shoe - I don’t get the chance to put many miles in them these days, but they’re still on the shelf, which says something.

Topo sticks with the formula here - a comfortable and supportive zero drop, Boomerang insole, durable materials, solid upper hold, comfortable but not crazy wide toebox, and no skimping on the outsole.

Creepers Socks

Speaking of comfortable toeboxes - a new color from Creepers as well as updated & improved materials. Hmmmm.. which shoe could be a good match for these?

Mount to Coast C1

Yea you guessed it! The C1 is actually the best fit for the Creepers, more so than the H1 - check out my full review which includes detailed comparisons between the C1, H1 and R1.

I also talk about how I’ve been piling up the “un-fresh legs” miles in the C1s after running a 6H timed race last weekend. Sorry, I cannot divulge my shoe pick, as they are still confidential at this point.

I ran officially 48.94 miles in 6 hours - which was a great confidence booster for my upcoming Backyard Ultra. No, I won’t need to run nearly as fast in that one, and of course I will be able to STOP and take breaks in the Backyard!

Arc’teryx Sylan 2

I was personally looking forward to this one - and the re-vamped Sylan 2 does not disappoint! I took this one out for a solid 17 miler through all kinds of terrain and it delivered on its promise of a propulsive and efficient mountain ride.

Aside from the new carbon fiber composite plate, the biggest change is the smoothing out of the rear rocker - giving a more balanced and stable feel.

Lowa Skyterra

German brand Lowa translates its alpine-driven design into a more “American-friendly” package: more cushioning, more energy, and a more accommodating fit.

But certainly not skimping on outsole! This one feels quite beefy underfoot - lots to break down and I’m waiting for the right terrain to open up. I loved the agile ride of the Amplux 2 GTX.. can the new Skyterra possibly adapt that ride to a much larger package?

Hoka Rocket X Trail

Hans Troyer crushed Black Canyon in this one. It’s been out for a while - a bit non-descript in the initial Black/Blue colorway. But this new lime colorway - WOW!

41/35mm of stack here - ATPU foam.. at a pretty insane 9.3 oz in my US 10 / EU 44. That is quite an explosive package!

Love the feel of that ATPU foam underfoot.. plate + ATPU.. a setup that I love in the Kipsummit Race. The foam feels even deeper in this model from Hoka.

INOV8 Trailfly V2

Ahead of the much-anticipated Trailfly Pro, I’ll be testing some updated models from INOV8. It’s been a little while since I’ve run in one of their shoes - they’re undergoing a bit of a brand refresh at the moment.

The Trailfly V2 gets a more secure midfoot fit, on top of sticker Graphine-Grip underfoot. This one has quite an interesting feel on foot - the flex groove along the ball of the foot allows almost a barefoot-type level of flex.

Of course, the OG beaded TPU Boomerang insole. I have to note that sizing seems to run pretty small here. I’ve got a US 10.5, yet they’re still not overly spacious. Definitely more to come here as I move through my testing queue.

Brooks Cascadia Elite

The iconic Cascadia - in perhaps its pinnacle form. I’ve got two pairs.. in two different sizes.. but why?

Mammut Aenergy Trail 2026

I round out my testing of Mammut’s all-new 2026 trail models. The Speed model is still my pick of the three, but there’s elements of the Endurance Ultra that work well as a super protective alpine shoe.

Although I did not run A/B in both shoes (they’re too different), expect the usual deep dive into all the details. These are Mammut’s first models - with more development on the way, keep an eye on this brand going forward.

UltrAspire Traverse

As you can see from the previous pic, I’ve started testing the new (20L!) UltrAspire Traverse pack. What better way than to carry around an extra pair of shoes on the run? I also have another segment in the Sylan 2 review checking out those super handy adjustable chest straps.

On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper

Another road super (or Hyper???) trainer in for test. I initially measured 45mm at the heel, so this one definitely qualifies for the category. 23 miles within just over 24 hours, with another 8 mile run, and a morning of skiing sandwiched in between.

Yea.. this Monster can handle some miles. Trying to see about getting a Lightspray model for comparison.. not sure how that upper would work out - I’d definitely need to size down - but it looks pretty radical!

RTIC 16 QT Road Trip Cooler

I’ve started to kit out my van for some summer RUN-ventures - cool drinks are a MUST! I saw the Road Trip Cooler pop up in my feed, and knew it would be perfect. The slim form factor is just the right size to stash in a smaller vehicle and has enough capacity for longer adventures.

Stay tuned for upcoming RUN-ventures on the channel! I’ve also got an Outback Jug in for test - cold drinks after long runs, and even refills mid-long run!

Tifosi Sanctum SL

We’ve been having more than a few t-shirt days throughout the winter.. perhaps a good time to think about some summer shades? The new Tifosi Sanctum SL removes the bottom rim from the stylish Sanctum for a fresh look.

For some reason (I can’t exactly figure out why) - the nosepiece on this SL model seems to hold more securely than the regular Sanctum. Perhaps better weight balance?

Mount to Coast C1

Mount to Coast enters the “super trainer” realm with the new C1. At 42/36mm, it’s Mount to Coast’s highest stack yet. This one has more of a road flavor, think - pumped up R1

That CircleCELL foam (from the H1) combined with a rubberized lower layer has something going on! Stay tuned for a full review towards the end of March and look for an early April release.

Nike ACG Ultrafly Trail

The 2nd version of the Ultrafly has been a long.. long.. time coming for Nike. Things are totally different this time around with the rebirth of ACG. Nike is taking trail seriously now.

But is this re-vamped “ACG” Ultrafly a big step up from the original? Can Nike be trusted to come up with a legitimate trail supershoe? I got out right away for an initial feel out. Check this one out for the scoop on fit and initial feel if you need to get into these ASAP.

I’ll have a more thorough review down the road after more miles, and you can bet on some comparisons!

Hoka Speedgoat 7

The title says it all - Hoka Speedgoat 7 - IMO, best Speedgoat ever. New supercritical midsole, better toebox, secure upper - everything you want in an every day trainer, long distance shoe, and race day option. Check out my video for 35 miles of weekend testing!

Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra

First Run video will be dropping this weekend. I actually took these out the day after my 25 miler in the Speedgoat 7. Boy was I shocked how good they felt.

The updated Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2 has that “WOW” factor once you take your first few steps in them. The heel and fit has been improved to the point where it feels glove-like for me. A worthy successor to the “original” Speed Ultra?? Much more to come with this one.

Adidas Terrex Agravic TT

It took the new Terrex Agravic TT out on tired legs, figuring they would be a good pick for a mellow day. Actually no, these are positioned more as a technical race day option.

I was surprised that they felt quite firm underfoot, but perhaps I was thinking about the Agravic 4 (I really like V3 as a training shoe). I’m going to look for some more rugged terrain to test these in (on fresher legs).

Fresh Releases

Yes, I like light colored trail shoes. Seriously, is this not the most gorgeous trail shoe you’ve ever laid eyes on? And yes, I think they’re going to look just as good with mud and dirt caked all over them!

La Sportiva Prodigio Pro (WHITE) - Oh btw, I upsized to a US 11 in this one - I’m looking to do some more longer distance comparisons in these..

TNF Altamesa 500 V2

The Altamesa 500 V2 was supposed to drop at the beginning of February, then I was told March 10, then it snuck out earlier on Running Warehouse. EDIT: now available at REI

This is one of the shoes I’m looking at as a potential Backyard Ultra pick (as well as the Mount to Coast C1). If you’ve snagged an early pair, let me know what you think.

Kiprun Kipsummit Max / Race

Check out my comparison video against The North Face’s Vectiv Pro 2. Such similar rides between these two - this wasn’t a full A/B test run, just some thoughts during a long run and a closeup look at the end.

I believe both the Race and the Max are available in Europe right now, but not yet in the US. Running Warehouse has them listed as available for order in April.

After YEARS(!) of waiting (just like the original Ultrafly), the new ACG Ultrafly has arrived! Are you ALL-IN on Nike ACG? Are you just itching to have that big swoosh (and glaring bright orange) on your feet out on the trails?

Well, if you’re anywhere on the fence, or perhaps curious about fit and sizing, check out my first run video.

I focus on the feel straight out of the box in this 10 miler, and dig into the fit and sizing of this latest Ultrafly. Hint - it’s wide, spacious in the toebox, but not out of control like V1.

Specs are verified as well - I find an exact match on the stack height at the heel (which is a rarity).

My US 10.0 weighs in at 10.4 oz (296g), while Nike reports a spec weight of 10.1 oz (in the same US 10). Most brands fudge the spec weight a little bit.

10.4 is not light for a trail super shoe. In fact many (plated) trail “super shoe” models are hitting the sub 10 oz range in my sizing. If does feel like a “substantial” shoe underfoot.

Yes, this shoe did win on the fast track of Western States, but it also seems designed to handle “All Conditions”. They went with a dual/parallel carbon plate setup to help with handling.

There’s still quite a bit of stiffness to manage, but the fit and foot security should help with that. I get the sense that the shoe will break in a bit with more miles and hopefully allow a bit more flex underfoot.

I’m getting serious about the 2026 season - the first race on the calendar is the Banana Slug Backyard Ultra in April.

It’s a Silver Coin event for the BIG’s Backyard Ultra Team World Championships. Essentially, if I win, I’m on Team USA! It’s a long shot, but I’m going to give it my best shot.

I spend a bit of time discussing my training status for the upcoming 12 week block. Also lots of discussion on Backyard Ultra shoe choices including the Mount to Coast H1, The North Face Altamesa 500 V2, as well as the Tarkine Autopilot.

Rewinding to my New Jersey trip - I had planned some technical East Coast trail testing for these two supershoes, the On Cloudultra Pro (new PURPLE accent colorway here at REI!) and the new Kiprun Kipsummit Race.

But it snowed, so all the rocks and roots were covered up. I did cover fit and sizing thoroughly, but keep an eye out for Part 2 of this matchup at some point.

Another two-parter here, this time with a Q&A session, followed by on-the-run testing. The North Face Altamesa 500 V2 (launching March 10) vs Salomon Ultra Glide 4 (available now, also in WIDE). Spoiler, I like both of these shoes, and they will both keep a spot in my rotation.

But I think one of them has better range as far as racing (and it’s certainly on my Backyard Ultra shoe pick list).

In my Q&A video, I talk about the discrepancy between the Ultra Glide 4’s specified stack height, and what I actually measured. Please follow me on IG if you don’t already - I post specs and comparison info that I find interesting there. I also get good ideas for videos based on comments and feedback.

We had one day of snow in the valley! I dropped everything in order to try out my ICEBUG Myr BUGrip studded shoes that have been sitting on my shelf throughout this so far non-existent winter.

It was actually a solid test run, with some snow, and sections of slicker frozen stuff underneath. Check out my companion article with a few pics from the run.

I’m super excited to have the new Zygos 6.0 from UltrAspire. V5 has been my go-to for pretty much all of my longest distance ultra races. It keeps the Zygos flavor, but there are some new changes. It has moved up in capacity.

I’m a big fan in general of UltrAspire, and I have many of their vests. Keep an eye out for a roundup of some of their latest models in the near future. Yes, I do have the Traverse (20L!) in for test. I have a couple of adventure ideas for that one.

I’m a slipper guy.. any time I go anywhere, on a trip, in the RV, hotels, staying at someone’s house, etc., you can bet I’m bringing some indoor comfort footwear!

I think it’s safe to say that ROLL Recovery has all the options covered here.

You’ve got your standard sport slide - the SUPERPLUSH S1 - seen here in their home spot next to the treadmill. Post-run, shoes off, sweaty feet straight in to the slides.

You may notice a styling change here - they’ve removed the large logo lettering from the top of the slide strap in favor of a smaller logo on the side. They look much more sleek now.

The SOLACE SLIDE takes comfort to the next level with a soft suede strap - which is adjustable!

There are two overlapping flaps which allow you to dial in your fit exactly. No more worrying about half sizes. I sized up this time to a US 10, and with those adjustable straps, the fit is superb. These have become my all day, around the house footwear.

Not to be outdone, for those who prefer a flip-flop style, the SOLACE FLIPFLOP offers the same adjustability as the SLIDE. A sculpted toe post maintains the soft, plush feel in every area.

The FLIPFLOP also adds a small, grippy traction area around the big toe. The SOLACE FLIPFLOP may turn into my backyard cruiser once the weather warms up.

All models use ROLL’s BLOOM foam - which is an Algae/EVA blend - just the right amount of compression/support with each step. The fit is roomy, allowing your foot muscles to spread out and relax. Enter the ICEBUG Myr BUGrip - featuring 17 steel studs underneath each shoe. Btw, ICEBUG is a Swedish company - they know their way around snow and ice.

Yes, I know you can just screw sheet metal shoes into any old running shoe.. I’ve done it. Yes it works, but oftentimes you can feel the pressure from those screws pushing up into the bottom of your feet.

And they certainly don’t offer the same level of agility and grip that you get with slimmer, integrated steel studs. Especially when paired with a solidly cushioned, yet stable, eTPU midsole..

What’s not to like about a well padded ankle collar to keep the snow and cold out (and foot warmth in)?

The heel sits deep in there, giving a positive feel of lockdown in slippery conditions.

Nice, smooth flex lets those studs adapt and do their thing.

If you’re out their on the trails in winter, or even out on the roads - having a dedicated studded shoe can give you the confidence to log those year-round miles!

Running Socks Roundup

I’ve been thinking about this one for a while - perhaps a new year is the perfect time to look into some new sock options? Sidas has been a go-to for me recently, and I do love toe socks in the right shoe. Some standout picks from Injinji and Creepers here.

More NNormal Kjerag 02 Testing

The NNormal Kjerag 02 is so versatile, it’s easy to think of comparisons. The Nike Terra Kiger 10 might not stack up against the Kjerag 02 as a race option, but perhaps its sweet spot is daily miles in the lightweight category?

Nathan Pinnacle Pro 6L

Another mixed test run here. The Pinnacle Pro 6L is more my style as a legit option for trail running/racing. Love those soft flasks, ExoSpine + extended straws.. a great setup if you prefer bottle storage lower on the chest.

This was a solid 17 mile test run for the Kipsummit Max. Loving this one so far - kept the feet fresh over the course of this long one. Yes, winter has been weird so far in Idaho - I got to try out a new t-shirt! the Apex Ultra from Haimont

Light and Fast - more Speed Testing

Currently working through testing of the three new models coming from Mammut in 2026. So far, the lightest- Aenergy Trail Speed has been my favorite. It does look kind of “Salomon-y”..

R.A.D UFO

Quick trip back to New Jersey this week - allowing me to rack up some road miles in the R.A.D UFO. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, and I really wasn’t sure if it was for real.. it is!

Surprisingly stable this one - watch the review to find out how!

Idaho Ski Trip

3 days of skiing, 60,000 feet of descent.. lots of sore muscles! Throw in a couple more ski days back home, plus a nordic day, and I actually ran only 12 miles last week!

Nordic Ski

Just enough snow coverage for me to bust out my Rossignol Omegas which were a $10 yard sale find (in Maryland!) many years ago. Nathan QuickStart vest is a good pick for nordic! I’m not experienced enough to have one of those swanky nordic waist packs. Btw, isn’t it difficult to pull the rear bottle out with those giant nordic poles in your hands?

Rabbit Cocoon 2.0

I’m wearing this one right now as I’m typing this. Come to think of it, I haven’t even washed it yet! Seriously! About 10 runs so far, skiing, casual use.. legit one of my favorite pieces of winter apparel.

A couple of weeks of mixed winter sports use, and I’m totally sold.

Quick rundown of the key features:

• Fleece lined, quite warm on its own with a baselayer

• Integrated hood / vented facemask

• Thumb holes

• Watch window on both sides

• DWR coating (for light mist, very light rain maybe)

I wear a size Medium. The fit is a little bit boxy and loose around the torso for me, but I do have a thinner frame and long arms. I prefer the loose fit and my preference would be to wear this for everyday cold runs as an outer layer.

I didn’t actually wear it on that run, as it was a bit too sunny and warm out (the Cocoon 2.0 is quite cozy!)

There’s a reflective strip along the back which makes it great for those cold night runs. The seams on the front shoulders are also reflective.

The vented facemask is the TOP feature for me. You can see this is the third variation here - facemask up / hood down. You can keep the entire thing down as a kind of loose buff, or use the hood with the mask down, or have both the hood and the mask up. Very versatile and great for varying conditions and levels of body warmth!

This is one of my favorite pieces of winter sports apparel right now - I’ve also used it as a ski layer, as well as casually since it looks so nice!
